Summer in Malibu
Part of: Brangelina , Britney , Gossip , Hollywood , LA , Reese Witherspoon , Television , TravelI've been housesitting in Malibu, which is the bomb. Where I normally live isn't deep in the city, but it feels oppressive in comparison. Malibu is one of the most relaxing places in LA and if you visit, definitely go there. We see so many picture of stars on the beach in Malibu, but we never know where they're taken. If you want to see stars and hang out at the beach, check out Malibu Lagoon State Park at Cross Creek road. Walk to your right and the houses you'll be passing are part of The Colony, where tons of movie stars live including Charlize Theron, Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe. You could even run into Pamela Anderson and check out her latest rack. When you get hungry, walk to the Malibu Country Mart and eat at my favorite low key restaurant that I've been going to for years called John's Garden. It's not fancy, but has amazing sandwiches and salads. You order inside, get a number, and pick up your order at a service window. There are quite a few tables outside that are first come first serve. Next door to John's Garden is Malibu Mutt. They have really good falafels and French-fries. You can top off your meal with an iced blended mocha or vanilla from Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf.
Then check out Madison and Planet Blue where the stars shop. If you want a proper dessert, go to Mary's Kitchen. They also have lunch food, but their selection of baked goods and sweets are what I crave. They also serve Peet's coffee, but if you want to have a Britney Spears sighting, then the Starbucks around the corner is the place to park yourself.
One of my favorite beaches is El Matador, which is past Trancas. It's gotten more well known, but the other beaches slightly north of it called La Piedra and El Pescador are nice, too. For a star sighting and a less crowded beach go left (south) once you get to El Matador. That area is Broad Beach where more celebrities live. If you walk by the beach houses on the sand you can see where Courtney Cox and David Arquette live (they also just bought a house in Beverly Hills). Brangelina and Cindy Crawford also live in that vicinity. Definitely grab a coffee at the Starbucks at Trancas and you might see Kate Hudson and Chris Robinson. The market there, How's, is where I once ran into Brangelina. If you head north for about 10 minutes, you'll see Neptune's Net on the right where Ryan Seacrest and Teri Hatcher went on their date. The other good seafood restaurant closer to town in mid-Malibu is called Malibu Seafood. For dinner try Nobu if you have the cash and want a very good chance of seeing someone famous. Otherwise, my favorites are Tra Di Noi for Italian and Taverna Tony's for Greek—definitely order the vegetarian feast that easily could feed three people. For slightly more casual dining, Marmalade is pretty good. Their salads and breakfast are my favorites there.
Heading back north, Moonshadows sits on the ocean and is another Britney Spears haunt. The only problem is that it's practically always insanely crowded. Duke's also sits on the beach, but I really only like it for appetizers and cocktails. It's very crowded on the weekends. The Sunset over by Zuma is harder to find, but a great place for cocktails or wine with an ocean view. There's also Paradise Cove Café, but I'll write about that later.
